The know culprit are usually black Carpenter Ants lay their eggs in the post just below ground level to keep a constant temperature for hatching their eggs. Once hatched they leave and the post is like a sponge with all the holes in it, when strong winds come, they crack right at that point and have to be replaced, or on some locations there in constant water and they start to rot.
